FLEXURAL BEHAVIOR OF REINFORCED CEMENT CONCRETE SKEW SLABS By Baldev Raj Sharma,Civil

Abstract
Skew bridges are planned to cross the rivers or drains at an angle other than normal without disturbing the geometry of the road. An analytical model has been developed for simply supported skew slab bridges with all feasible skew angles and aspect ratios on the basis of yield line theory. Analytical results have been confirmed by experimental work also. It is found that the collapse load, crack pattern of the test slab specimens support the assumptions made in the analytical part.The study reveals that the construction of only those simply supported skew slabs may be recommended whose short diagonal is greater than the span.
A table for coefficient W / MX ( Point load applied at the center / Required momentcapacity of skew slab ) has been evolved by using the analytical formula for skew angles 5° to70° and aspect ratios 0.3 to 3 with an increase of 5° and 0.1 respectively. Required momentcapacity of simply supported skew slabs for a point load applied at the center may be workedout either by the analytical formula derived or may be calculated by simply dividing the value ofthe point load applied at the center with the coefficient given in the table.
